Mid-19th Century Transfer Plate Dutch Lieutenant Hero of 1831 Belgian Revolution

J.C. Josephus Van Speyk Memorial plate about 7 ½” by Dawson & Co. circa 1830 creamware portrait with vine border and military vignettes. Captain of gunboat which was blown into the port of Antwerp during a gale and was boarded by Belgian who demanded surrender and the Dutch flag. Rather than be capture he fired a pistol (or threw a lit cigar, depending on story teller) into a barrel of gunpowder in the armory on the ship. Only 3 of the 28 crewmen survived. Speyk was not one of them. In 1833 the Dutch King proclaimed there will always be a ship in the Dutch navy named Van Speyk. Beautiful plate.
