Old Politicals Auction #28
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2018
Copper disk impressed with typical center design seen on many GW Inauguration buttons. The size of 25 mm does not match up to other recorded die pressed GW buttons with similar designs. Although this example exhibits evident of being produced from a die, the uneven impression makes us reasonably certain this is a “hammer and punch” strike and not machine screw pressed. No evidence of ever having a shank on the reverse. Although the copper disk is smaller than a typical GW button it has the same thin appearance. Little wear evident. It is possible this could be a test disk for a GW button design, but we don’t think so. Rather it is more likely something made for the 1876 American Centennial or perhaps 1889 GW Inauguration Centennial or some other similar event. More research will be needed to further refine the origin. We have never seen this before.
