About 7” x 4 3/8”. 1-page front/back. To former Senator from VA William Archer, stating his intention to not contact the Convention unless he were to receive the nomination. He further states in his acceptance speech he would include a statement of his views in support of the compromise of 1850. Transcript as follows: I have decided to write nothing to the Convention or any individual member, before the nomination, but should that honor shall to my lot, I shall, in my acceptance, give my views, on the compromise measurers, in terms at least as strong, in their favor, as those I read to you two days since. Please say as such to my friends Governor Jones, Mr. Botts, Mr. Lee &&&” Unique and Scott’s public support of the Compromise of 1850 in effect was one of the main reasons Pierce won the Presidency in the 1852 election pitting pro and anti-slavery forces against each other raising it as a public election issue.
