Benjamin Harrison Type Signed Letter May 2, 1898

Letter size sheet with Indianapolis Indiana letterhead address. Addressed to a General Charles Manderson in Nebraska. Long involved one sheet letter He is declining an invitation to speak at a festival/exposition. However, at the bottom on the sheet he comments on how he “elated over the great news of Dewey’s victory at Manilla” and comments on hoping there are no “reverses” to come. Manderson entered the Army during the Civil War as a first lieutenant, and rose through the ranks to resign as a colonel in 1865; he was also brevetted brigadier general of volunteers that year. Manderson was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate from Nebraska in 1883, was reelected in 1888 and served from March 4, 1883, to March 4, 1895. Nice content. Comes with R&R COA.
