Large 18 ½” x 11 ½” visible without mat. Shows Butler in Uniform and apparently in Louisiana since Schell did spend time there and probable got to know Butler. Interestingly the man shown with Butler could be a self-portrait of Schell. Face hidden is likely intentional. Francis H. Schell (1834–1909) was an American artist, illustrator, and lithographer, active in Philadelphia and New York. Many of his works appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, where he headed the art department, the Century, and several other publications. Francis Schell is known for his Civil War work. Examples of his works are contained in the Smithsonian and other institutions as well as private collections, but they rarely come to auction as best we can tell. Frame appears to be from the 1904 period with a composite wood slat backing but the black paper seal is missing. Grime has settled on the inside surface of the glass but does not seem to have affected the painting itself. Restoration to its original state should not be difficult. Old paper tag on front on glass. Unique. No known prints appear to have been made.
